Rap was BORN pop. People don't realize that. I'm listening to Freedom by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. That's 80's old school rap. It's so pop.

Hell, NWA was being bought by teeny bob pink shirted twelve year old blonde white girls.

It might seem to you shameful orgins, but's the dealy, so deal.

the race of the people buying albums dosen't determine wether its "pop" or not hell hip hop is primarily listened to by surburban white kids why do you think eminem caught fire so easily sure he's dope but even he admits it "if i were black i woulda sold half"

Nah I dont think rap came from pop, Most know that rap comes from jazz and soul. When you listen to peeps like "salt and pepper" they was one of the first to introduce pop/dance to hip hop, Listen to The sugerhill gang... Thats abit of funk mixed wit jazz, Think about it like this... When hip hop started mixing with pop, most Reggae was out the window! Also we gotta remember pop stands for popular.

well...think about it this way......i personally believe that rap is rap and isnt BECOMING pop....sure, when a famous rapper releases and album, he makes a few of the singles catchy and pop like so that they can reach the widest audience possible, and u would do that same..... i feel sorry to admit this, but pop is far more popular than rap on a larger scale, therefore, if a rapper releases a mainstream single he can reach BOTH audiences, thus rake in as much money for that single as Bill Gates does in a day (which is ALOT)..... and anyone who says theyd refuse $5 million so they can stay "true to rap" is a liar....sad but true....i know i would make a few mainstream singles if it resulted in me making shit loads of cash....but i still dont think rap is turning pop..... i believe that rap caters for rap fans, and this is proved even by 50 Cent's album.... sure, he released "inda club" and "21 questions" so he could cater for pop fans, in turn earning himself more money, but if u are a true rap fan and after "non mainstream" songs, go after the other ones, there are plenty of 50 cent songs which are not mainstream.... patiently waiting, dont push me, many men.... etc, eminem, for example, has: soldier, when the music stops, drips....all these songs are great but would never be popular to the pop audience becoz of this simple equation: pop + rap popularity = more money than rap alone....so of course mainstream singles will be more popular becoz both parties can listen, but there are PLENTY of non mainstream tracks that can keep u occupied if u dont lyk mainstream...i personally find "inda club" awesome (becoz of the tight ass beats), but i wouldnt choose it over patiently waiting becoz i am not a pop fan.... i hope this shed sum light

Nothing wrong with Pop-Hip-Hop.

Unless it caters too much for the audience, and therefore leaves very little substance to it. i.e. becomes watered down and hollow.

Thing is, there's too much of the latter nowadays. But that's cos hip-hop has grown so much. And gone right into the mainstream of music. It's got caught up in the 'machine'. Like most music genres do once they get there.

But you're probably talking about pop with a different definition. The watered down, overly manufactured part. Catering too much for the audience, losing the art and substance. So i'll leave it at that...
