Biologically speaking, when you're facing a dire life/death situation, the body does things physiologically to you to put you at a disadvantage.

#1...The brain shuts down peripheral vision...So that your focus is immediately on the danger in front of u...This would make it hard to conspire with other people when you're panicked.

#2...THe body kicks into fight or flight mode...This is mostly instinctive, and doesn't require higher brain function. Therefore, in a panic, the average person is likely to resort to these tactics and not be of sound mind.

I gurantee that if anyone here was faced wit the same situation those students were in, and in the same circumstances (meaning no prior knowledge), you probably woulda done the same thing.
