you can only use protools unless you have external hardware m-box is suggested...it really dont matter what you use though.. its all about the plug ins...

^it's true....but the reason why a lot of people who record still don't get taken seriously regardless of the plugins is down to the way they use them...some of them still haven't grown past presets, that's not to say once in a while you won't get lucky and the preset will be roughly what you were looking to achieve, but that obviously will not be the case most of the time lol
