Tutorial>Cool Edit>The basics

IP: 34BF DD77

First: When you start Cool Edit up make a new file. Go up to 'Generate' and go to 'Silence' and put in the white box 200 or so depending on how long your beat is put 200 I recommend. After this is done go up to 'Transform' then 'Noise Reduction' and then 'Noise Reduction' again and click on 'Load Selected profile' and once that finishes loading go to the 'Noise Reduction Meter' and put it on 95 and click on 'OK'. This is supose to take out all the fuzzy and hissing in your song. Might not do anything to the silenced wav you generated but I read it from a website. After you done that go to 'Edit' and then 'Insert In Multitrack'. Now click the Multi Track logo under the File and Edit to bring up the Multi Track session.

Second: Once your silenced wav is in the multi track should be in Track 1. In track 2 load your beat up. Make sure the beat is in Wav. format. If it's MP3 format it won't work. To change your MP3 beat into WAV holla at me on AIM: Kurious2188 to get the converter. Once this is done and the beat and silenced wav is in the Multi track your set. Before you record delete the extra silence on the silenced wav with a green line in the middle. Line it right up with your beat so it ends at the same time. Click the red 'r' button in the section your silenced wav is loaded in. The 'r' button should be under a Yellow 's' where theres a green 'm'. Once the 'r' button is glowing Red you'll see your entire wav turn a reddish pinkish color. Click the speaker on the bottom of your computer screen where the clock is and a few other icons if you have any to bring up the Volume Control. On the Microphone section make sure your Microphone volume is all the way up. If you wanna try a new way to record to hear yourself rhyme click in the box to uncheck the mute button in the Microphone section in the Volume Control. WARNING: Make sure your PC Speaker volume is down a lil' so you don't blow your speakers from loud noises that comes in from the mic. I perfer to put the volume tab half way. After this is done bring up Cool Edit again if it's not. Click the Record button on the bottom where your Play, Stop, and other buttons are and start recording.

Part 2: The Effects

Alright time for part 2 now. This part is setting up good effects to make your vocals come out nicer sounding. More of a crisp warmth feeling. Put these settings exactly as said...

To get the best Reverb that isn't to noticeable but able to hear go to 'Transform' 'Delay Effects' and then to 'Reberb' and put these settings in.

Total Reverb Length: 1000ms
Attack Time: 60ms
High Frequency Absorption Time: 2500ms
Smooth, Perception, Echoey: 75

Original Signal (dry): 100%
Reverb (Wet): 2%

Click a check in the box next to Combine Source Left and Right and then click 'Add' and best name for file is Light Reverb.

**This effect is best to use for your main vocals**

Now for the Chorus. To get a great chorus effect to barely hear but noticeable put these settings exactly as said.

First go to 'Transform' then go to 'Delay Effects' and click on 'Chorus' and put these settings in...

In the Chorus Characteristics part put these settings in

Thickness (In the white box put the number one) Voices
Mix Delay: 2.4ms
Delay Rate: 1.8Hz
Feedback: 7%
Spread: 17.3ms
Vibrato Depth: 1.9dB
Vibrato Rate: 8.84Hz

Next part is the Stereo Chorus Mode...put these settings in.

Make sure there are no checks in the Average Left and Right, Add Binaural Cues boxes
Narrow Field, Wide Field: 50%

In the Output put...

Dry Out: 100%
Wet Out: 24.7%

In the box put a check where it's named Highest Quality (but slow)

And to finish it off make sure there isn't a check in the box marked Dry Only

After all this is done for the Chorus click on 'Add' and name this file to 'Light Chorus' or anything else u want to call it

This chorus is excellent for background vocals and Choruses in your songs.

Part 3: The Filters

After your verse is finished with double click the wav so your in editing mode.

Go up to 'Transform' then click on 'Amplitude' and click 'Dynamics Processing' and click on '4:1 Compressor 20dB' and click on 'OK'

Now go up to 'Transform' and down to 'Delay Effects' and click on the setting of your Light Reberb you made in the Tutorial Part 2 I made in this forum. If you havn't gotten those settings make sure you get them.

After that go up to 'Transform' and click on 'Noise Reduction' and down to 'Noise Reduction' and click on 'Noise Reduction' and click on 'Get Profile From Selection' and after that in the 'Noise Reduction Level' and put it at 3 and click 'OK'

After this step go up to 'Transform' then to 'Amplitude' and click on 'Normalize' and put it at 95% or 90% or 80% depending on how much is goin on with your beat. I perfer to put it at 90% and 80% for your chorus and backup vocals if you have any. Make sure Decibels Format is unchecked and Normalize L/R Equally is checked, and last have DC Bias Adjust unchecked. After all this click 'OK'

After this stage your main verse should sound good. If the Noise Reduction makes your voice sound strange try taking Noise Reduction off and putting Hiss Reduction on Standard (Many people say this takes alot away from your verse but with good filters it sounds pretty good). Once this is done go back to the Multi Track mode.

Now your main verse is done now on to your chorus...

Highlight your chorus so it's in single mode to edit it and mix it. Go up to 'Transform' and click on 'Amplitude' now to 'Dynamics Processing' and click on '4:1 Compressor 20dB' and click 'OK'

Go up to 'Transform' and click on 'Delay Effects' and click on 'Chorus' and click on Light Chorus that you adjusted the settings to in my tutorial in this forum in part 2. Click 'OK'

Now go up to 'Transform' and down to 'Noise Reduction' and click on 'Noise Reduction' and click on 'Get Profile From Selection' and once it finishes loading up go down to the 'Noise Reduction Level' and put it at 3 then click 'OK'

Now go up to 'Transform' and click on 'Amplitude' and to 'Normalize' and then put it so it's at 80% for best results and click 'OK'

After this is done your chorus is finished...

For your backup vocals do the same thing and don't be afraid to add effects along with the chorus or reverb on you verses to make the track sound interesting.

For the last touchups you'll have to download T-Racks24 from Kazza

Go up to 'Edit' in the multi track view with all your verses saved chorus, backup vocals, etc. click on 'Mix Down' and click on 'All Wavs' this will take a few minutes depending on how long the track is. Once it finishes all the wavs you made backup vocals etc. will be one big wav. Go up to 'File' and go to 'Save As' and save it as anything that you want and save it in a folder anywhere where you can find it (Best bet is to save it on your desktop so you can right away see it and find it). Bring up T-Racks24 and in the bottom right corner near the play and stop buttons click on 'Open' and look for your verse and click open.

Once your track is loaded up in T-Racks24 go up to where it says 'Defaults' and either it'll show the list already there or a Load and stuff option show up. Either one is fine and look for 'Suite - Gentle master 1' and click 'Load' or just click on 'Suite - Gentle master 1' and it'll load up automatically.

Now after this is done on the bottom click the play button to hear what you just did to your verse. This will sound 5X's better. More smoother and MP3 sounding like. After thats done click stop and click on 'Process' and save it in any folder you want (Again i'de save it on the desktop for easy finding) and name it as anything you want. After that click OK or w/e it says and it'll take a few minutes to run through the song by itself putting the master effect on it. Once finished go listen to your track and voila your finished with a great sound quality.

For mic recording skills make sure if your usin a comp plastic mic with one of those stands line the mic right up above your nose equal to it and start recording. Why? so when you say certain words it won't pop on you. When recording make sure if the music is playin through ur speakers at the same time make sure your music is pretty low so u can barely hear it but just enough to hear it. OR you can plug your headphones in and listen to the beat from there and record on your mic so it's totally silent in your verse.
