Anyone keen on physics?

If you dug a man hole right through the earth and jumped in, what would happen when you hit the center just around the core where gravity stops making you fall?

I mean ofcourse you would die from heat, but say you hypothetically overcame that problem..

Would you float in mid air, being in a virtual dead spot of gravity? Like an eye of the storm..

Or would your momentum just throw you right up to the other side of the planet?

What do you think...

How fast do you think you'd be going?

Thats a very very very long distance to fall..

To escape earths gravity, you must be going at around 7 miles per second. Keeping in mind the closer you got to the center of gravity, the faster you would drop.. You could quite possibly attain speeds fast enough to push right through...

The question is whether you would be fast enough to not swing back and forth for a while before becomming stationary.

Thats where you'd need to be keen on physics.. Calculating the falling speeds of an average weight man falling right through the radius of the planet.

To put it into perspective, if you dropped a 5 cent peice off the empire state building, it would be traveling fast enough at its small weight to become embedded into the concrete below.

Imagine a human body traveling a far longer distance than that...

The momentum of your fall would send you far up the other side, but not as far as the original point you jumped off was... Then youd get pulled back to the centre and up the original side, pulled back, up other side, constantly travelling less and less...

You could probably figure out how far each "swing" would be and how many "swings" there would be with some kind of formula...

Acceleration -
The amount of force gravity has * (velocity of you[radius of the earth/time] * your weight)

Reverse it for the deceleration, then however much the result is over the radius take that as the new distance and work out the acceleration again...

But I hate maths, so screw actually working that out and theres probably some vital thing that I missed.

Then how can you be sure you wouldnt swing right to the other side like a pendulum if your not going off some solid calculations?

And what if you were dropped from a height on earth? How high would you then have to be dropped from before you could swing right to the other side?

Hmmm... Well you could figure it out with the same kind of formula...

If the end result is HIGHER than the diameter of the earth, then take away the diameter from the result and thats how far above your original starting point you'd be..

The interesting thing is that if that did happen, theoretically your swings would get bigger and bigger each time due to the acceleration... You might even break free of the gravitational pull if you did it for long enough...

So thats the main thing, is it less than or more than the diameter.

terminal velocity for humans is around 120mph

so it'd be that fast...but ye...i reckon you'd prolly get stuck in the middle in a weightless like manner coz obviously the momentum of the drop would send you past the centre but then you'd fall the other way then gradualy you'd lose momentum and be in the middle of the earth to roast like a marshmallow on an open flame

i say you would be crushed cuz theres gravity around the earth
you fall and gain speed then u FLY through the non gravity area
then u hit gravity again which is coming from the oppisite direction
cuz what was down now is up and u would flatten out like a pancake

Yup.

The center of Earth = most dense.

Same concept as a Black Hole: The further you go in, the more gravity there is being applied.

yeh i agree with apexx on that but i think an average man would have like a pendulum effect sorta thing though until he became stationary and got crushed by the force

Calculate it. 9.8m/s^2 for however many meters in the Earth's width to find your speed when you hit the center. I imagine you'd bounce back and forth until you eventually came to a stop.
