It's easier if you record louder and lower the volume. It makes the final product sound better.....or to make it easier, just lower the beat instead of raising the vocals

to start you don't use any bulshit "de esser" you learn how to mix and strip it out manually. That hiss is ALWAYS gonna be on your vocals though, its stuck "inside" your highs.
a good fix is a noise gate when you record, a better fix is to get a mic that's actually worth a damn. the best fix is to have a professional mix your vocals.

you want to know what's wrong with a de esser? you already said it: "i know i can reduce the hissing but that takes a lot away from my vocals at the same time". Once you said that I already knew you were using a de-esser. Personally, I never have and never will use a de esser. Noise gates. Volume envelopes. Equalizers. These are the tools i use to extract hiss out of a vocal with surgical precision. "Presets" butcher the sound. Everything I use is custom made. I can't think of one tool i use that's fresh out the box.
im not suggesting you spend money because i want you to spend money. im suggesting you spend money because what you want to do is not do-able on your budget. With Cooledit and "presets" you're trying to get an Escort to run like a Ferrari. "champagne tastes on beer money" is fitting.

that's an oxymoron lol. nah furreal man I'd be here all day if i broke down why you can't sound pro via cooledit but the #1 handicap is its sample rate. cool edit is hobby grade man, its like you doing graphics on MS Paint. best way to get studio quality out of cooledit, my bad, best way to TRY to get studio quality out of cooledit, is to record your session and export it into an entry level Pro grade program like Nuendo or Cubase. or even better, just flat out record it in a better program with a real sample rate like nuendo or cubase.

^lol these cats dont have logic pro money. or logic pro skills, logic is definitely what i'd call "advanced" on both the pocket and the ability. besides, you know my chant is DP anyway lol.
El Rey, a noise gate should trim some of that hiss off and you still want to set the mic input gain at an acceptable level where you're not clipping where you record. to get the left chanel back to center set the recording chanel input from Stereo to the Left chanel. as for tuts, i dont know of any. i dont know of any tuts for any programs specifically champ i don use em and i dont need em. what i do need is to find out how to get my damn input how to read in DP and still send to the default out. but that's another topic.

shit take so long to do manually, other than settin your own presets to speed up the process can u set a preset with all your presets? so i dont have to go through each one individually each time for each track. if i could just hit one preset for all my presets, for each track that would be dope. if not is mixin all the vocals down to one track then mixin'em all at the same time take a lot from the quality? cuz that would be one way i know to speed it up.
.. either way my biggest deal is distortion now wit the co1u. i got the hissin to a respectable level but i can't do anything to the distortion. should i spit further away, is there any way to do my set up to cut down on distortion? or is it an effect i can play with? .. and also is there any link to those cool edit replacements that are free like cool edit? i had acid pro, dude told me that was better but shit wasn't workin right for me. should i try that agian or can someon hook me up wit somein else? if i gotta spend money dont worry about it

if you expect there to be a "quick way" to do something right in mixing, there isn't. i mix all day and even my "quick ways" are the exact same processes as "the long way", just done faster thanks to DP's Window Templates (which go from my Sequencing arrangement to my Mixing arangement in one step rather than 20), quicker interchanges that load the files exactly where and how i want them to, no exporting, etc. so make no mistake about it, there's no shortcut to good quality man. I can mix a track to "good" status in under an hour. But If you knew how long it took to mix a track to perfection you'd be surprised.
for distortion, step the hell back. you should be recording at least 4" away from your mic. recording with your lips on the mic is that made for TV or live performance shit. and the only program you can get that'll be a substantial improvement to cooledit without being a brainraping program for a beginner is Cubase or Nuendo. i dunno if you can get it free or not, but El Rey did. Audition, Audacity and the like are all in the same hobby grade category and basically a paralell step to cooledit..
