If you truly are above this sort of thing, then show it by not defending yourself. The reason this whole thing has gone on for so long isn't only everyone being against you, it's you being against everyone else.

I don't know about everyone else, but if I was assaulting someone (physically or verbally) and they didn't fight back, I would probably stop. It's no fun hating on someone who doesn't respond to being hated on.

There's a story about when an old man was in his town, and it got invaded by a huge army. Everyone left except the old man. The general of the army was offended that a lowly old man would dare oppose him, the mighty commander of an enormous army, so he went to see the old man. The conversation was like this:

G: What are you doing old man? Do you know who I am? Leave at once or I'll be forced to take action.
M: I'm quite comfortable where I am. *sips tea*
G: You've made a grave mistake, you don't know who you're dealing with. I'm the general of this entire force. Do you realize you are standing before a man who can run you through without blinking an eye?
M: Oh? And do you realize you are standing before a man who can be run through without blinking an eye?

The general could say nothing. He would have been defeated even if he killed the old man. He was honorable and knew when to admit defeat, so he left the town peacefully.
