Well it's not a good/bad thing, because it doesnt matter how good you are, if you arent saved (meaning that you believe God sent his son Jesus through the virgin mary, to die for your sins and arise on the third day to sit on the right hand of the father) you are still going to hell. There is no amount of good deeds that you can do to get into heaven because salvation is not earned. Those who are saved are saved through God's grace and all men are sinners and fall short to the glory of god. The way you look at the concept and how it relates to today and our "now reality" is what I precieve as the way God has blessed us, and the consequence of our sins. But at the same time, what we dont have can be looked at as what God is taking us through to strengthen our testimony (cause you dont want advice from someone who has'nt been through anything or not similar to your situation) also, in our decrease, God's glory is increased. Meaning God sometimes gives and takes away so that we wont get besides ourselves and think that we did everything on our own.

Actually the Bible itself says study my word and hide it in your heart so that it may not depart from you. Meaning the bible requires dillegent study, and interpretation. I'm not sure about the helicopter thing, but Jesus himself spoke in parables so everything in the bible isn't to be taken in a literal sense. It has a lot of symbolism and metaphors.
