Chorus Why can’t things be like they used ta be?/ Everything has changed since you met Adam B./ C’mon now, girl, why can’t ya see?/ You should be standin’ right here next ta me/ Verse # 1 We first met in grade eight, on the first day of school/ Everyone came in with new gear, tryin’ ta act cool/ We both had Ms. Brewster as our homeroom teacher/ I admit, I checked her out, dat would anger any preacher/ But she looked pretty good and I must say, I was impressed/ I knew she’d be a girl who could cause me a lot of stress/ But I was still curious, so I asked a female friend I knew/ "I saw you two talkin’, do you know her, does she know you?”/ She said, “Yeah, man, her name is SAL and we go way back”/ I said, “Cool, I know her name, now, can you give me some stats?”/ She told me, “She used to go to Bridgewater, this is her first day.”/ I said, “See ya” to my friend and then I walked away/ Chorus Why can’t things be like they used ta be?/ Everything has changed since you met Adam B./ C’mon now, girl, why can’t ya see?/ You should be standin’ right here next ta me/ Verse #2 We became really close friends right from the very start/ Always shared everything, never kept one another in the dark/ She always told me the different guys she liked, who she wanted to date/ I’d tell her if the guy was cool, I’d never give them any hate/ All the while, I just gritted my teeth and just tried ta hide/ The fact that I wasn’t on her list, I was never identified/ As a guy that she’d feel that way for, gotta say, it hurt my pride/ I hate to admit it, man, but there were some nights that I cried/ See, I never felt that way about anyone in my life/ I liked her so much that I even imagined her as my wife/ If I’da told her how I felt at first I woulda scared her away/ That’s not what I wanted at all, I’da stayed with her all day/ Chorus Why can’t things be like they used ta be?/ Everything has changed since you met Adam B./ C’mon now, girl, why can’t ya see?/ You should be standin’ right here next ta me/ Verse #3 In grade nine, we were in the exact same class, just like the year before/ She was the first person I met eyes with when I came through the door/ My first thought when I saw her was “This year is gonna be fun,/ My God, look at those eyes, man, they’re brighter than the sun”/ Part way through the year, my hopes and dreams were suddenly crushed/ All the little voices in my head were all abruptly hushed/ By that time, SAL knew the way I felt about her, so it hurt me even more/ But before that, I knew not of the pain that God had for me in store/ I then found out that my best friend had a brand new girl/ Turned out that it was SAL, that fact made me wanna hurl/ Even though it hurt me bad, me and Justin are still best friends today/ He’ll always be my homie, and that’s how it’ll always stay/ Chorus Why can’t things be like they used ta be?/ Everything has changed since you met Adam B./ C’mon now, girl, why can’t ya see?/ You should be standin’ right here next ta me/ Verse #4 Needless to say, all three of us have moved on from there in grade nine/ When we started at Park View, SAL became a lot harder to find/ In grade nine she had a rep, she viewed this as a brand new start/ We hardly ever talked in grade ten, we just grew apart/ Now she has a different boyfriend, they’ve been together for a long time/ Visions of them together stick in my brain like an extremely strong rhyme/ Ova the years she’s told me about different stuff, like fights with her mother/ She knows how I feel, she loves me too, but only like a brother/ I wrote this song to help me get some emotion off of my chest/ And ta let everyone know that to me, SAL is the very best/ Three years have passed and my feelings for her have only increased/ SAL, I love you, baby, and I will until both of us are deceased/ Chorus Why can’t things be like they used ta be?/ Everything has changed since you met Adam B./ C’mon now, girl, why can’t ya see?/ You should be standin’ right here next ta me/
