Movies Openings for the week of Sept. 30

IP:

Into the Blue (PG-13) Wide Release
Forget about the plot — this is really just an excuse for Jessica Alba and Paul Walker to run around in skimpy swimsuits for two hours.

Serenity (PG-13) Wide Release
Joss Whedon's short-lived cult-fave TV series Firefly comes to the big screen. The cast has no big names, and sci-fi is a tough sell, but there's a built-in audience that has been eagerly awaiting this flick.

The Greatest Game Ever Played (PG) Wide Release
Fore! Shia LaBeouf (whose name is so much fun to say) plays real-life legend Francis Ouimet (another nifty-sounding name), the first amateur to win the U.S. Open golf tournament.

The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio (PG-13) Limited Release
Julianne Moore stars alongside Woody Harrelson as a woman who feeds her family by writing commercial jingles. The odds of having those songs stuck in your noggin' for hours after the movie are terribly good.

Capote (R) Limited Release
Philip Seymour Hoffman plays Truman Capote in this Oscar-baiting drama about the legendary writer's trip to Kansas to research his true-crime masterpiece, In Cold Blood. Another Capote bio, Have You Heard?, hits screens next year.

Duma (PG) Limited Release
Based on a true story, this kiddie pic tells the story of a young boy who travels across South Africa to return his pet cheetah to the wild. And yes, the big cat is quite cute. Aww.

MirrorMask (PG) Limited Release
It's the story of a little girl named Helena, who wants to run away from the circus. Uh, pretty sure she has it backwards. On her way to a normal life, she wanders into the Dark Lands, a surreal head-trip filled with crazy monsters and other strange visions.

Sueño (PG-13) Limited Release
For those who lack a basic knowledge of Spanish, that means "dream" or "sleep." The dreams John Leguizamo has in this drama are of the rock-star variety.

The War Within (NR) Limited Release
Doesn't look like this indie is gonna pull any punches. It tackles the subject of suicide bombing head-on. The story follows a Pakistani man who decides to join a terrorist cell after being hassled by the American government.

Three Days of Rain (NR) Limited Release
Hey, it's Chekhov for people who are too lazy to read!

Little Manhattan (PG) Limited Release
Oh, no. This li'l' love story, about a couple of tween New Yorkers, looks saccharine enough to make you gag.

Going Shopping (PG-13) Limited Release
So this is where Rob Morrow went. Hadn't thought about him since Northern Exposure. This dramedy follows a shopaholic woman left with no cash after her hubby gets canned.
Intrepid clay Brits Wallace and Gromit are working as pest controllers (of the humane variety, natch), and when they're called upon to capture a mysterious, vegetable-munching beast, things get weird … and potentially dangerous. Helena Bonham-Carter and Ralph Fiennes also voice characters.

Good Night, and Good Luck (PG) Limited Release
Based on a true story, this drama follows newsman Edward R. Murrow (David Strathairn), who, in 1954, produced a broadcast that exposed Sen. Joseph McCarthy. His actions sparked a national backlash that finally stopped the senator and his red-baiting hearings short.

The Squid and the Whale (R) Limited Release
It always sucks when your parents get divorced, but it sucks a little bit less, maybe, if your parents are Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney. Quirky Wes Anderson co-produced this family drama about two young lads coping with their parents' split.

The Gospel (PG) Limited Release
Never missing a chance to preach to and reform today's wayward youth, Hollywood is now offering them this music-filled tale of the redemption of a kid who turned his back on his deity. Note to studio execs: Gospel and R&B probably isn't the way to grab 'em.
