Day Dreaming Nightmares

Shards of broken dreams splinter the air,
As they fall echoing year old surprises,
Against the pale darkness of the night,
While I trace memories of sun burnt scars.

The tallies dulled with my fingertips,
As these lonely nights never seem to end.
I’ve raised this nightmare against the stagnant air
That beats with the faint cries of fallen criminals.

Here only the vermin of our fears can live.
As they stalk my nightly prays pleading for the daylight.
My dream catcher has been devoured,
Like the daily breads tossed through the light.

Even now the light blinds me to the infinite darkness
That I’ve grown so accustomed to.
Here the glimpse of a daydream
Will remind you of the demons that room with you.
It’s best not to dream at all.
