Intro

I started up the LBL in April 2006 with a vision, aha, that sounds so gay. Anyway, I started the LBL up because I wanted to give RapVerse a tight league. I’d just got bored of modding the EBL over at Emcee Forums, so I was a free agent if you will. Every time I’d peep RapVerse they’d have a different league, it was stupid. It was like they couldn’t find someone who could consistently run a league every week with mags ‘n battles up on time. These old league mods would complain about people constantly no-showing when they couldn’t even put threads up on time? And then to top it off they didn’t even do a mag? That was kinda obvious to me, so I set out to start the LBL and I hyped it big from the start. I implemented some new rules and assured everyone that threads would be up on time along with mags. Quite a lot were tentative at first, as they hadn’t heard of me and they knew how RapVerse was with leagues. Then the LBL blew up. For a good few months it was undoubtedly the best league on the net. The battles were hot, the battlers were hot and voting was good. Things were looking tight. It started to dip after a while, but it remained a credible league up until it ended. People used to laugh at RapVerse. Then heads like Butler, John Hensley, Shake-Zula, Roger Glocks, Mercules, Mets & Phryme signed up and made the league credible. In a couple of months the site had gone from being an ignored, albeit reasonably skilful, site to being the hottest on the net with the best league on the net. That’s really dope. I wanted to do this mag to send the LBL off properly. I’ve always hated leagues that just finish with all the battles open and everything with an unfinished feel to it. I like to finish things properly. Therefore, this mag will be dealing out awards and accolades to the people who’ve made the league hot from when it started.

Best Battler of the LBL

Butler

Butler was influential in making the LBL a legitimate league. Up until the point he became champion, the champs had been Mimesis, Chrit and N.Tavarez. All nice battlers in their own right, but none of them are known or respected netwide. Butler however is and was. He signed in in June and faced Faime S. Quotez to start. The battle wasn’t a question of whether or not Butler would win, it was a question of whether or not he would show. And yeah he showed, murdering Faime in the process. That started off his run which would see him becoming the person with the longest undefeated record, clocking in at 13-0. Add to that the fact that he held the title for 6 weeks and that’s a dope as hell run for any league. It comes down to something else though when naming Butler the best battler of the LBL. Often, tight battlers half-ass and drop just enough to win. Never really excelling themselves or dropping dope verses to be proud of. Yet Butler dropped tight verses consistently, every week and that’s what makes him the best battler in the LBL’s history.

Best Rookie of the LBL

Te Ora

It’s like a fairytale or some shit. I was out scouting at other sites, and after being linked to a site called ANOTHA.com, I peeped the league. Now hooly shit, the league sucked complete dick. There were no nice battles going on, it was a land of newbs and the voting was awful. Add that to the fact that everyone sucked…well cept one dude. And that was Te Ora. Surprisingly, considering that voting was awful, Te Ora was champ so that shows how far ahead of the league he was. He had a lotta potential and he was pretty good already, so I invited him to the LBL. He signed in and went undefeated for a couple of weeks before losing to Roger Glocks, which is nothing to be ashamed of, especially as a rookie. But he kept at it and then a month later he made it to the champ match. He lost to Roger Glocks, but again he kept at it and made it to the champ match again. Losing to Roger Glocks haha. Considering he’s been battling for like only a year he did dope in the LBL, attaining a record of 14-4. And the thing I find best about him is the fact that he’s improving every week. It’s obvious as well, dude gets better with every verse he drops. And how that he’s comfortable with the style he’s got, all his stuff comes across as hard hitting. Give it a few months and he’ll be able to champ any league. Watch out for him. There’s no doubt he’s the best rookie of the LBL.

Most Dedicated Battler of the LBL

Sonny Dimebags

Think about this figure: 31 weeks. 31 weeks. That’s how long Sonny has been in the LBL. And throughout that whole time, he has NEVER no-showed. That’s dope as hell. While he’s often known to half-ass and drop late, haha, dude always shows up and votes no matter what. He’s a nice battler as well. Reaching 4 championship matches and 7 contendership matches he’s always hung around the top. His best verse came against N.Tavarez where he dropped a monster closing section and just beat the firm favourite Tavarez to make his first champ match. Sonny’s definitely the most dedicated member the league has seen, so props to him.

Best Cypher Battler of the LBL

Nick Fletcher

The LBL decided to start a cypher thread in May. This was pretty funny really, cos it wasn’t even meant to be a regular thing. It was meant to be a PPV only gig, but due to miscommunication when I went on holiday and Mimesis took over the league, he started it into a weekly thing. The members liked it though, so it was kept and it proved to be very successful. From the time it started to the time it finished, a lot of lines were dropped. A lot of whack lines, but also a lot of dope lines. Yet there was one dude who stood out as the best cypher battler. And really, this is a no-brainer. Over the months this league has been up, Nick Fletcher must have dropped AT LEAST 857,536 lines in the cyphers. He’s won the most also. Clocking in at 6 wins. He always drops the most lines, and he usually drops the best lines. So there’s no doubting that he’s the best cypher battler in the LBL’s history.

Most Disappointing Battler of the LBL

SPuL

KORV3 had just happened. Spul won it, defeating JTR in the final in a nice battler. The LBL started. The hype was pretty big, things were looking up for RV. Spul signed in and vowed to win the LBL title. As the KORV3 champion he was expected to do this. He signed in, reached 2-0. All was pretty good. Peeps were saying that he could definitely win the title after this battle. He was facing Mimesis, who had reached the semi’s of KORV3. Spul went the extra step and won it, so he was being predicted to win. Mimesis dropped, he dropped a cool verse. Spul dropped, he dropped terrible. He half-assed his verse and got shutout easily. He was in the contendership match the week after that battle, due to certain reasons, and he faced N.Tavarez. He dropped weak again and got sweeped. That contendership match was the closest he ever got to the title, and he never got that high again. Dude is now solely audio, as he seems to have lost interest in text. Well, he had all the hype for a few weeks, but he blew it and there’s no doubt he’s the most disappointing battler of the LBL’s history.

Top 10 Best Ever LBL Battles

10. John Hensley vs Phryme (24th September 2006 - Concept Flipping Battle - No Show Verse)

Aha, so yeah I’m starting off the top 10 battles with a verse. Yeah I know, it shouldn’t really be here. But the verse was so good that it could make up for the other verse that was missing. Hensley dropped such a dope verse, it was a real shame that Phryme no-showed. Hensley even outdid his verse from the first concept flipping battle he was in, ‘n that’s a hard thing to do. The align punch and the funeral punch were both so ill. ‘N the best thing about his verse was the fact that not one bar was weak, everything was good or excellent. Dope verse, this battle would have been higher if Phryme had dropped, and had dropped a nice verse.

9. Roger Glocks vs John Hensley (17th December 2006)

One of the last very good battles of the LBL. This had Glocks at his 8th week of being the LBL champ, a reign which was started after Hensley no-showed him in his first defence. Hensley had yet to become LBL champion, even though he’d been in the league a few times before. Hensley dropped first and his verse was very tight. One of those verses where every punch hits. Glocks dropped and he came very close to beating Hensley, but his verse just lacked praps one quotable to beat him. Cool battle. Marquee names. And historic in that it ended Glocks 8 week reign as champ.

8. Appocolyptik vs Nick Fletcher (17th April 2006)

A battle between friends is always gonna be cool, ‘n this turned out to be a nice one no doubt. It was underrated at the time, as it didn’t even get battle of the week in the mag. Yet it was recognised later on and put into the hall of fame. Both battlers came nice and it was a very close battle. Appocolyptik dropped first and he had a cool verse, some creative concepts and nice personals all mixed in together. Nick dropped and his verse was also very nice. That dawson punch was cool, fresh concept and dope execution. Both brought out the best in each other, making this a tight battle and worthy of 8th place.

7. Butler vs Mercules (20th August 2006)

This battle was hugely historic. It marked a massive change in the LBL and the competitors in it. Butler was at his 6th week of defending the title with a 13-0 record, after beating Merc previously to retain that title. Merc had worked his way back up to the champ match after this defeat, and no one really expected him to win. Everyone thought he’d drop a cool verse and make it a nice battle, but no one thought he was gonna win. Butler dropped a dope 32 lines to start with, full of personals on Merc. Then Merc matched him dropping most definitely the best verse of his life. He came hard at Butler and took the battle 5-2, to end Butler’s reign and change the LBL forever. Dope battle and hugely historic.

6. John Hensley vs Nick Fletcher (28th May 2006 - Concept Flipping Battle)

I’m sure a concept flipping battle had been done before, but this was the first one I’d ever seen. And two creative battlers being in it made it a classic. Fletcher and Hensley had previously had beef before this, Fletcher called out Hensley a few times on RapVerse, but Hensley wasn’t really active around RV to notice. This beef came back up when the battle was set and it made for some nice pre-hype. The battle happened and the word choice made by Mimesis looked good, some nice words that could be cleverly flipped into concepts. Nick Fletcher dropped first and his verse was very tight, some really nice flips and some well worded concepts. A very nice verse overall. The pressure was on Hensley to drop well, especially as he’d often been called out as being the best ever at wording. He dropped and…woah. His verse was unbelievable. Clearly he proved everyone right who said he was one of the best ever at wording, as his verse was grade A stuff. That Mac concept, dayum. Fletcher was blown away even though he dropped a dope verse himself. Nice battle and it started battlers doing concept flipping battles again.

5. JTR vs N. Tavarez (30th July 2006 - Weedhead Battle)

Oooh yeaaa, roll that blunt and SMOKE IT before reading about this battle. The LBL has been home to some really creative match types. Girlfriend picture battles, mack battles, wrestling battles. Lots of those types have happened in the special events here. But nothing could top the Weedhead battle. JTR and N.Tavarez decided on this type of battle for the July Special Event. So it came about and JTR dropped first, dropping a mooonsterous 50 lines on N.Tavarez. N.Tavarez obliged and matched. When you went into the thread you had to push away all the smoke to see the verses, I swear. Both these dudes clearly know their weed and there were so many dope bars, all of them were funny from both. Creative battle and executed perfectly.

4. Butler vs Shake-Zula (I - 16th July 2006)

Two WBL legends coming together for a battle sounds like it’s gonna be tight, and it definitely was. Butler had just beaten Roger Glocks in the champ match the week before, and Shake beat So Rell in the contendership match. So both had pretty tough battles, but they came through and won them setting this battle up. Butler was only into the 2nd week of his reign and with the verse that Shake dropped, you’d have thought it was gonna be his last. Shake’s verse was dope. Full of creative concepts, ill wordplay and tight wit. Then Butler dropped, and he dropped better. He had an etch-a-sketch bar that was crazy. Butler came through and took the win, afterwards a few believed Shake had won, yet they hadn’t voted. Shake dropped down the rankings while Butler defended his title a couple more times. Butler hadn’t seen the last of shake though…

3. DaTrusHurtz vs JTR (8th October 2006)

The championship match often brings about epic battles. Battles that will be put in archives and remembered forever. Long line battles that would get zero votes, yet due to it being the champ match, it receives the whole leagues attention. The best two battlers in the league at the time going at it over the title. It’s a beautiful thing. And this battle was most definitely a beautiful thing. Both battlers checked in, and even based off that you knew it was going to be a dope battle. They included pics of themselves and pics of their girlfriends. That’s a lot of ammo. And both used that ammo to the fullest, going 60 lines apiece. Remember what I said about epic? Yeah, that pretty much describes this. JTR dropped first and absolutely ripped the hell out of DaTrus’s gf, I bet he was crying after reading it. Obviously along with the disses aimed at DTH. Overall it made a dope verse, and DaTrus was taken aback by the 60 lines giving JTR an advantage. Yet DaTrus musta been full of creativity that night as he matched JTR and also ripped JTR and his gf. JTR must also have been crying. So after both dried their tears the votes came in, and it was very close. The tally came to 5 to DaTrusHurtz and 3 to JTR, extending DaTrus’s reign and depriving JTR of the LBL title once again. Epic, long and fun to read makes this a dope battle.

2. Butler vs Shake-Zula (II - 13th August 2006)

Read a couple of battles back and check what I said about Shake. Yeah, he got back into the championship match again; once again facing Butler who’d defended his title up until then. Shake clearly wanted revenge, he hadn’t beat Butler before and he’d made sure to stay in the league for the sole opportunity of facing him again. Butler had, as usual, been dropping dope verses for all of his title defences. Beating Mercules, Sonny Dimebags and SlicKnife since he last faced Shake. Shake had got here by beating Nasdeey, Erel Avent and JTR. The battle was set, and then extended until Friday due to time constraints. Butler dropped first. His verse was 32 lines long, and well, basically everyone of them was dope. The dash bar was one of those “…woah holy shit holy fuck goddaaaayum” punches that you rarely get to see. Then Shake dropped and matched. Haha, damn, his verse was ill as well. That colon line was hilarious. Dope verse from Shake. So it came down to the voters. Butler edged it by 2 votes, winning in a close one. This was the battle that marked shake-zula’s disappearance from battling, as he hasn’t been seen since. Praps he’s at home devising more lines to beat Butler haha, as Butler seemed to be the one obstacle he couldn’t overcome. So if you wonder what the hell could top that, read on…

1. Butler vs Roger Glocks (9th July 2006)

Daaaaaaaaayum. If there was ever a battle that made a whole league, this was it. You can talk about the words credibility, respect and desire, and all of those words can define this battle. Credibility, as it gave the LBL credibility as a legitimate league. Respect, as people now respected the LBL as a legitimate league. And desire, as people now desired to be in the LBL. All that from one battle, crazy. But it happened, and it made the LBL what it is, along with staying on top as the best LBL battle ever throughout the leagues whole run. From July 06 to January 07 it stood out as the best battle ever. When you read the previous battles in the list, add up all the talent that’s been in the league and think of the amount of ill match up’s that have been set in that 6 month period, it makes this battle stand out even more. This battle was set and well, Glocks wasn’t really known. Butler was known all over the net, but Glocks? Nah, peeps didn’t really know him. He’d only been about a year off winning a newbie tournament at B-Boys. He was obviously a good battler, but he was no way near the respect level of Butler. So both dropped their pics, and both pics were weird and pixelated. This looked like it was gonna be even easier for Butler, simply because Glocks didn’t have much material to go off of. Butler dropped first, coming with 34 lines, and his verse was hilarious. It was consistent, it had wit, it had humour, it had brutality. It was a superb verse. I read his verse and laughed at the thought of Glocks even coming close to it. Then Glocks dropped and I stifled the laugh and felt stupid. His verse was crazy. It also had consistency, wit, humour and brutality. This was gonna come right down to it, and it did. Butler edged it, winning by 2 votes. Dope battle. Historic in that it made the LBL. And a worthy best battle of the LBL’s history.

Outro

That’s it. The LBL is finished, however I’m sure it could come back if the right mods want to bring it back, as it has a base of people who would join it. That’s something to keep in mind. The LBL was dope and as you can see from this mag, a lot of dope stuff happened in it. I had fun running it and it was especially cool to see unknowns rise up and make names for themselves. I’d like to mention Sonny Dimebags, Te Ora, Ace Heratoga, So Rell & Rush Lingo. Then you had the heads who were known on RapVerse, but not really anywhere else. Mimesis, N.Tavarez, JTR, Nick Fletcher. Next were the people who hadn’t really checked out RapVerse much, but they made their name there. DaTrusHurtz, Roger Glocks and even Mercules, who legitimised himself in the LBL. Then the vets who wanted to battle other dope heads. Butler, John Hensley, Mets, Shake-Zula. This league was dope and it had a lot of dope things happen in it, so as I said previously, I wanted to end it with a dope mag. Enjoy the read and peace, it was a fun league to run.
